10-0 run in the final seconds of the first
quarter and into the second quarter propelled the
Commandos to a 42-25 win in opening round action
of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament over the
Saukees of Pittsfield. Corey Gruber was seemingly
unstoppable for Abingdon (8-1) as he finished the
day with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Gruber was
9-of-17 from the floor on the day.
The Commando
defense shut down the Pittsfield (7-4) attack
allowing only 28 percent field goal shooting. The
Saukees were led by Nick Grote and Trevor Miller
who scored seven apiece. Pittsfield's Kyle Harris
led all rebounders with 8.
Pittsfield will
play next at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow against the
loser of Farmington and Carthage. Abingdon
advances to the winners' bracket where they will
take on the winner of the Farmington/Carthage
game.
NOTES:
- The last Abingdon win in the tournament was
2004 when they defeated Farmington 56-48 to reach
the 5th place game which they would eventually
lose to Macomb 47-45 in overtime.
- The lead never changed during the game.
However, there were two ties.
