Wierzba reaches milestone in OT   December 27, 2008
#4 seed survives opening round scare
Farmington jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to watch as Illini West came back to grab a seven point lead. A 13-0 run by the Farmers gave them a 12 point lead with just over two minutes to play. Those 12 points evaporated over the closing moments of regulation, forcing overtime.

Farmington coach Tom Wierzba watched his squad hold Illini West scoreless in the extra period as fourth-seeded Farmington moves on with a 50-40 opening round victory. The win secured Wierzba's 600th career victory.

Farmington (7-1) was led by Scott Hammond's 18 points while teammates Preston Peterson and Gabe Ayers each reached double-figure scoring. Ayers finished with a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds).

Jacob Schmudlach topped Illini West (1-4) in the scoring column with 20 points.

Farmington earned a rematch with Lewistown Monday afternoon at 5:00 while Illini West will take on Monmouth-Roseville at 9:00 a.m. Monday in the consolation bracket.
