| The
early crowd at Western Hall was treated to an
exciting contest to begin the second day of play
at the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament. In the
end Illini West endured six lead changes and five
ties before notching a 60-52 win over
Monmouth-Roseville. The Titans, last year's champs, took
a three-point lead on a Markus Hunter layup early
in the final quarter, but Illini West's (2-4)
Cody Carson answered with a three to knot the
score at 39. The Chargers took the lead for good
on a pair of Drake Schmudlach free throws with
just over six minutes to play.
Monmouth-Roseville
(6-5) became the first defending champion to go
two-and-out since Warsaw won the 1998 gathering
and then went on to lose both of their 1999
contests.
The Titans were
led by Nick Leary's 23 points, seven of which
came from the free-throw line in nine attempts.
Illini West Got 19
points from Cody Carson who hit on five of his 11
three-point attempts. Jacob Schmudlach scored 14
and collected 10 rebounds while Drake Schmudlach
and Ser Whitaker added 11 points each.
The Chargers await
the West Hancock vs. Knoxville winner. That game
will be played tomorrow morning at 9:00 at Macomb
High School.
