Monmouth-Roseville (8-5) won in the opening
round for the ninth consecutive year, but had to withstand a
late aerial assault from the Little Giants (1-7), who canned
nine three-pointers on the day.
The Titans used a 13-2 run spanning the
third and fourth quarters to build their largest lead at 55-41
with six minutes to go. But Canton buried three treys over the
next three minutes to make it a ballgame. Eight
Monmouth-Roseville turnovers in the final 4:10 of the game
helped tighten the screws as well.
Luke Miller’s triple with 1:49 to go cut
the deficit to 59-54. Kaleb Owens hit one-of-two at the line to
get Canton within four with 1:25 remaining. That would be the
final point scored in the affair. The Titans handed the ball
away on their next three possessions, but the Little Giants
couldn’t take advantage. It wasn’t from lack of effort, however.
Canton misfired on their
final six shot attempts, including two three pointers and two
free throws on a single possession.
Monmouth-Roseville shot an amazing 77
percent (10-for-13) after halftime to break away from a 24-24
tie. JC Sells and Jamonny Skinner joined Olson in double figures
for the Titans. Skinner was a spark to say the least as he added
seven assists, eight rebounds, and four steals in 24 minutes off
Owens grabbed eight rebounds to go with
eight points for Canton. Trey Passmore led Canton in scoring
with 12 points. Garrett Brant added 11 with four assists. The
Little Giants forced 21 turnovers with Caleb Miller securing
five steals. Canton only gained a 18-17 in points off turnovers,
