The Central Panthers halted the Lewistown Indians’ nine-game winning streak, taking a 44-31 decision in the nightcap of the first round of the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament. The Panthers displayed a smothering defense, limiting the Indians to 30 percent shooting on the night.

2017 All-Tournament team member Lane Ippensen got Central off to a great start, recording 10 points in the opening quarter as the Panthers (8-3) raced out to a 12-2 lead in less than five minutes. Ahead 15-5 after the first quarter, the Panthers extended their lead to 15 in the second thanks to three-pointers by Jalan Vance and Bryce Long.

Trailing 24-11 at intermission, Lewistown (11-2) came out of the break with renewed spirit. Zach Severns and Cade Beekman combined for all the points in a 10-0 Indians rally that pulled Lewistown to within 26-23 with two minutes to play in the third quarter. Lewistown got even closer following a three-point play by Beekman that sliced the deficit to two late in the period.

Central gave up most, but never all, of its lead. Eric Jones buried a three-pointer on Central’s initial fourth quarter possession as the Panthers turned around the 15-5 edge Lewistown enjoyed in the third quarter with a 15-5 final quarter themselves.

Lewistown pulled to within three at 34-31 following a Beekman triple with 4:12c remaining, but those would be the final points for the Indians on the night. Central put the clamps on the Lewistown attack, finishing the game with a 10-0 spurt.

Ippensen led the Panthers defense with four blocks to go with a team-high 14 points and four assists. Cole Williams, a 2018 all-stater in football, recorded six points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Beekman scored a game-high 17 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Severns grabbed six boards and scored five points.

Central earned another late-night tipoff, advancing to take on third seeded Farmington in the fourth quarterfinal Thursday, Dec. 27 at 9:30 pm. Lewistown will be matched up with Liberty in the consolation bracket at 2:30 pm.
