The Pittsfield Saukees (5-7) overcame a sluggish start to fight and claw their way back in the fourth quarter to beat the Canton Little Giants (1-8) 43-39 in the second consolation quarterfinal of the 2018 Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament.

After a quick opening basket in the first quarter by Isaac Shaw of Pittsfield that gave them a 2-0 lead, the Little Giants took over the lead with a three-pointer by Caleb Miller with 6:49 left.  Canton would stay in front or tied for the next 25 minutes of the game before Pittsfield will pull back into the lead and never relinquished it.

The first quarter and the first part of the second quarter was a struggle for both teams as there appeared to be a lid on the hoop.  The Little Giants held a slim 9-5 first quarter lead as both teams combined to shoot 22% (5/23).  The second quarter started off worse as the two teams went scoreless for the first 3:15 before a Cade Tomhave three-pointer with 4:48 left broke the drought.  The scoring picked up after that with Canton holding a tight 19-18 halftime lead.

The Little Giants and Saukees traded baskets for most of the third quarter but Canton used a quick 7-0 run over 2 minutes late in the quarter to push the lead to nine.  The Saukees picked up the intensity to close out the remaining 1:10 of the quarter on a 7-0 run of their own to provide them some momentum going into the fourth.

Pittsfield would finally break through with their first lead since early in the first quarter on a reverse layup by Cooper Priest, giving the Saukees 1-point lead at 38-37.  The Saukees were able to ice the game at the line and survive a couple of missed three pointers by Canton to hold on for the win.

Pittsfield was led by Shaw, scoring a game high 13 points on 5 of 5 shooting.  Will Guthrie contributed with the second double-double of the tournament scoring 11 points and pulling down game high 14 rebounds.

Garrett Brant led Canton with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.  Miller and Kaleb Owens each chipped in for eight points apiece.

Pittsfield moves on to the consolation semifinal round playing the Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes.  Pittsfield last trip to the semifinals came in 2013.  Tip-off for this contest will begin at 9:00 am at Brophy Hall on Saturday, December 29th.
