In the first quarterfinal game of the tournament, the West Hancock Titans (11-1) met and defeated the Crimsons of Jacksonville (2-10) by a score of 53-41.  After the Titans built a late lead, Jacksonville responded with a full court defense, quick fouls, and quick buckets.  The Crimsons scored over half of their total points during the last period.  But the Titans withstood the pressure and will advance to the Saturday semifinal round.

The game was heated and physical, featuring nosebleeds and technical fouls (three of each in fact).  In the end, the #1 seed Titans showed their mettle.  In some aspects, the numbers appear to be in Jacksonville’s favor.  They out-rebounded West Hancock 35-26.  They had a better shooting percentage at the free throw line (68.8% compared to the Titans’ 57.5%).  But some other numbers tell the rest of the story:  15 turnovers to West Hancock’s six, four steals to the Ttians’ nine, and seven points off of turnovers compared to 16 for West Hancock.

The biggest difference was 27 personal fouls to West Hancock’s 16.  Included in these were three technical fouls, which proved to be quite costly.

West Hancock was led once again by 2017 All-Tournament member Drake Hammel with 24 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.  The only other scorers for the Titans were Peyton Dooley (eight points), and seven each from Caleb Sinele, Lucas Dorethy, and Drew Martens.  West Hancock will need to shoot better from the floor as they eye a repeat title.  (They shot just 35.9% from the floor in this contest).

For Jacksonville, Noah Newton had the team-high in points with 10 and also grabbed seven rebounds.  Zack Rose added eight points as well as a game-high 11 rebounds.  Nick Cook and Carter Hays each added seven points.

West Hancock advances to the semifinal round and will play the winner of the Rockridge and Monmouth-Roseville match.  That game will be Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm in Western Hall.  Jacksonville will move into the 5th place bracket to play the loser of the Rockridge and Monmouth-Roseville game.  That game (Game 19) will be played on Saturday morning at 9:00 am in Western Hall.
