This year’s 5th place game was a
nail biter that was decided by a couple of unfortunate missed
free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining as the Crimsons of
Jacksonville (4-10) edged the Farmington Farmers (12-3) by a
score of 43-42. What
might be the weirdest stat you hear today is that despite a
close game all the way through and a 1-point final score,
Jacksonville led wire-to-wire.
Facing an 11-7 deficit after the 1st
quarter and a 20-11 hole at the half, the Farmers outscored
Jacksonville 17-14 in the 3rd and 14-9 in the 4th…only
to fall a single point short.
Down 43-41 and possessing the ball with

With 0:11 left, they threw the ball down low to Blake Springer,
who was fouled by Jacksonville’s Zack Rose.
Springer would hit the first free throw and then miss the
second. He grabbed
his own rebound and a timeout was called with 0:03 left on the
clock. The play
drawn up got the ball to 2017 All-Tournament veteran and senior
forward Jarod DePriest, who was fouled with 0.4 seconds
overwhelming pressure, DePriest missed both shots and the final
horn rang out.
Turnovers were even, steals were even, and
both teams shot pretty much the same percentages.
Farmington did have the advantage on rebounds 28-19.
The difference was on free throws, as Farmington only
shot 5-for-15 from the charity stripe.
The Crimsons were led in scoring and
rebounding by Zack Rose, who finished with 12 and five,
Newton contributed nine points, Carter Hays pitched in seven,
and Lukas Hadden added six.
Jordan White had a game-high seven steals.
Farmington had a single double-digit scorer
in Ben Martin (10 points).
Other notables include Jarod DePriest (nine), Jaden
Rutledge (eight), and Corbin Rutledge (seven).
DePriest had a game-high eight rebounds.
In winning the 5th place game,
the Jacksonville Crimsons take home hardware for the only two
years they have been in the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament.
Last year, they won the Consolation title.
