Coming off losses in the quarterfinals, Mercer County and Eureka were eager to get on their winning ways so they could get a chance at the 5th place trophy. Mercer County would ride fast breaks and points in the paint to edge the 4th seeded Eureka Hornets by a score of 47-38. The Golden Eagles came out of the gate hot and were leading 16-4 at the end of the first quarter. The rest of the game was back-and-forth and much closer, but on the back of that first quarter by Mercer County, Eureka was not able to mount a comeback.
The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by Brady McPeek’s 21 points and Spencer Andresen’s 17 points (on 8-of-10 shooting). McPeek also led the team in rebounds with 11. Lucas Marston and Andresen also added seven rebounds. Holden Demuth pitched in three assists and four steals. Mercer County outscored Eureka in fast breaks 17-6 and on points in the paint 34-28.
The Eureka Hornets used a balanced scoring attack led by Brock Monk’s eight points, Grant Roberts’s seven points, and Connell Roth’s seven points. Monk led the team with six rebounds and Jack Blunier grabbed five boards. Jacob Schulz collected four steals and five rebounds. The Hornets bench outscored the Golden Eagles bench by a count of 9-0.
Mercer County (8-3) advances to the 5th Place Game, while Eureka (8-4) has been eliminated.
