The second 5th place semifinal was a close, back-and-forth affair that saw eight lead changes and a narrow 51-49 win for the Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes over the Brown County Hornets. A-Town was leading 27-21 at the intermission, but Brown County had a second half that not only bridged the gap but nearly allowed them to take home the victory. The Hornets outscored the Tornadoes 28-24 in the second half. Despite the aforementioned eight lead changes, A-Town actually led 24 minutes of this contest, compared to just 5 minutes for Brown County. The Tornadoes held a 12-point lead with 3:47 left in the 3rd quarter, but Brown County climbed back to lose by just two. Turnovers were a big story in this game, as A-Town only had nine giveaways to Brown County’s 20.
A-Town was led in scoring by Ryker Darst’s 14 points, Alex Foutch’s 11 points, and Ayden Stromson’s 11 points. Tre Kenon added seven points and tied for the team-lead in rebounds at five with Owen Timmons, who came off the bench. Darst pulled down four rebounds to go along with a team-high four assists and six steals. Darst also drew eight of the 16 Hornet fouls in this game. Darst never left the floor in the game, playing all 32 minutes.
Brown County’s leading scorer and rebounder was Henry Ingram’s 19 points and 13 rebounds on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor. Jackson McNeff recorded 14 points and Michael Kassing’s nine rebounds also helped pace a Hornets team that outrebounded the Tornadoes 38-18.
Abingdon-Avon advances to the 5th Place game, where they will meet up with Mercer County for the trophy. Brown County’s tournament is over.
