The Consolation Championship match was certainly a doozie, and arguably the best game in the entire event. The Liberty Eagles could not miss in the first quarter, shooting 12-of-17 (71%) and scoring the first 20 points of the game. In contrast, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans went 3-for-13 (23%) from the floor and took a huge 26-6 deficit into the second quarter. Then, something shifted and the Titans switched into an entire new gear. Monmouth-Roseville used defense and grit to hold Liberty to just two points in the second quarter and climbed back to a respectable 28-21 score at the half. After taking the final two quarters by a score of 18-15 and 12-2, the Titans executed the massive comeback and knocked off the Eagles by a final score of 51-45.
The Titans (4-7) were led in scoring by a quartet of double-digit scorers: Kaden Russell (12 points), Nick Huston (12 points), Clay Casteel (11 points), and Cee Sarcomo (10 points). Russell also had a game-high 11 rebounds, and Huston and Casteel each tied for the team-lead with three assists. The team also outrebounded Liberty 35-22. Entering this tournament, Monmouth-Roseville may have been written off by many fans with their 1-6 record. But looking closer, their pre-tournament losses came at the hands of some of the best teams in both this tournament and in the area (West Hancock, Orion, Abingdon-Avon, Canton, Riverdale, and Mercer County). Those opponents had a combined record of 62-20. The Titans only led this game for 3 minutes in total, but they did when it counted.
Liberty was led in scoring once again by Reed Sparrow, who finished with 13 points. Sparrow also finished with a game-high four steals and drew all eight of Monmouth-Roseville’s fouls. Gavin Edgar finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Vince Cramsey and Tate Huber tied with three assists to lead the Eagles. Liberty’s 20-point run was a tournament-best, unfortunately they allowed 25 second chance points by giving up 19 offensive rebounds to the Titans.
Monmouth-Roseville wins the Consolation Championship trophy! Liberty has been eliminated after an impressive consolation bracket run.
