The quarterfinal chaos continued as the second seeded team fell in as many games as the Macomb Bombers defeated the #3 seeded Abingdon-Avon Tornadoes by a score of 39-32. The rims were especially tight in this contest, as the teams combined to shoot 25-for-83 (30%) in this contest. Unfortunately, a lot of missed layups and unlucky bounces plagued both teams. After A-Town led 7-4 after the first quarter, Macomb charged back and took the second quarter 15-6, leading 19-13 at the intermission. Low scoring continued in the second half and Macomb held on to win by seven.
Macomb didn’t have a double-digit scorer but was led in scoring by Kellen Martin’s nine points. Nolan Hoge, Nick Elbe, and Carter Havens all tied with eight points. Hoge grabbed 11 rebounds to led the game. Drew Watson’s three steals led the team. The Bombers didn’t miss a free throw in this game, going 10-for-10 from the line. The Bombers won the battle of the paint by a total of 20-to-12 and their bench outscored the Tornadoes bench 9-2.
Abingdon-Avon had two players finish with eight points: Alex Foutch and Ryker Darst. Tre Kenon added another seven points and a team-leading seven rebounds and three steals. Foutch’s two assists led the Tornadoes. A-Town was unable to recover from a game in which they shot 11-for-41 (27%) from the floor.
Macomb (9-4) advances to the semifinals, where they face the winner of the Illini West vs Brown County game. That contest will be Tuesday afternoon at 1:30pm in Game 22. Abingdon-Avon (11-2) falls to the 5th place bracket, where they will face the loser of Illini West vs Brown County in Game 20, Tuesday at 10:30am.
