In Day 2’s final matchup, the Chargers of Illini West used a 25-9 run late in the second half to knock off the #2 seeded Brown County Hornets by a score of 45-41. Brown County took a 23-14 lead into halftime. The third quarter was close, but then Illini West took over the fourth and final quarter. In fact, the Chargers combined to sink just seven field goals combined in the first three quarters…and had eight field goals in the fourth. Brown County led this game for 20 minutes but was unable to hold on.
The Chargers (11-3) collected 14 offensive rebounds in this game, leading to a second chance advantage of 16-4. They were led in scoring by last year All-Tournament member Wesley Robertson’s 16 points and 13 rebounds. Myles Wear dished three assists to lead his team. The Chargers turned 19 Hornet turnovers until 16 points. Interestingly, Illini West finished with 15 steals, with five players finishing with three steals each. Instrumental in their comeback, the Chargers went 11-for-14 (79%) from the free throw line.
Brown County (7-2) was led by Henry Ingram’s 20 points and 10 rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting. Michael Kassing led the Hornets with five assists and added five rebounds. Taygen Hohenbery had a team-high three steals. Bradley Markert and Connor Flynn each collected three blocks.
Illini West earns a spot in the semifinals, where they will get a rematch with Macomb, who they played to a 4-point loss earlier this season. That contest will be Tuesday afternoon at 1:30pm in Game 22. Brown County will play in the 5th place bracket against Abingdon-Avon in the 10:30am Game 20.
