In defense of their #1 seed, the West Hancock Titans used a dominant second quarter to edge the Mercer County Golden Eagles by a score of 66-48. Three minutes into the second quarter of this game, the score was tied 19-19. West Hancock proceeded to score the next 13 points and when these teams went to halftime, it was suddenly 32-19.
Despite having only four players score, West Hancock had each score in double figures. Hunter Froman paced the team with 21 points and 13 rebounds (including six offensive rebounds). Cooper Knowles and Wade Gooding each scored 16 points. Braden Hurt added 13 points and a game-high seven assists. Knowles grabbed 10 rebounds and his six blocks add to his tournament lead total of 11. The Titans led the points in the paint battle 34-24 and scored 18 fast break points compared to the Golden Eagles’ six.
Mercer County was paced by Brady McPeek’s 21 point effort off 5-for-8 from beyond the three-point line. Spencer Andresen also finished in double figures with 10 points. McPeek and Lucas Marston each tied with six rebounds. Holden Demuth led the Golden Eagles with six assists. Marston’s four steals led the team as well. Mercer County’s bench outscored the Titans bench by a score of 11-0.
West Hancock returns to the semifinal round to play in Game 21 (Tuesday at Noon) and will face the winner of the Eureka/Canton game. Mercer County falls to the 5th place bracket where they await the loser of that same Eureka/Canton game. That contest is Game 19, which will take place Tuesday morning at 9:00am.
